Unsub with a heart of gold? Alex O'Loughlin talks CRIMINAL MINDS
Alex O?Loughlin has survived the unfortunate demise of his cultfavorite CBS series MOONLIGHT, and is moving on. One of theconsistently good parts of that sometimes wobbly show, it was only amatter of time before O?Loughlin was snapped up for a million otherthings. Currently awaiting the fate of his pilot THREE RIVERS, withJulia Ormond (about a team of organ transplant surgeons, based on reallife Dr. Gonzalo Gonzales-Stawinski), borne out of a development dealwith CBS, Alex is guesting on tonight?s CRIMINAL MINDS, starring asVincent, the unsub who you can?t help but feel a little bit sorry for! I had the chance to chat with Alex last week about tonight?s episode, what he hopes you get from his portrayal of a disturbed man, and whathe hopes for his fans in the future!
I had the chance change to watch your episode of CRIMINALMINDS and I have to tell you. That show does some creepy stuff, and Imean this as a compliment, your character is super creepy!
[laughs] Well thank you, I think! [laughs] He?s a little creepy!
Where did this role come from?
Simon Mirren, the writer, and co-executive producer on theshow is a friend of mine. He said, I?m writing a role with you inmind, I want you to read it, and do it. I said, Really? Okay. I readit, and I was like, this is great. I really want to do it, and talkedto my agent. I was like, look, the role, blah, blah, blah. I?mtalking to CBS, they said I can do it. How do you guys feel? Theysaid, well how do you feel? I said, it?s perfect, let me do it. Imean, it?s not like ?let me do it?, I make the decisions, but it?slike, they?re my team, and I want them on board with the decisions Imake. You know, it?s not often I get to play these character roles;it?s not often I get to read these character roles! I hadn?t workedfor like 10 months, so I thought it would be a great way to blow outthe cobwebs and get ready for the pilot, and they were like, well,we?ve got your back! So I did it. I?m really glad I did it!
The character itself, you do so much with an almostwordlessness. So much is conveyed physically. What kind ofpreparation goes into a role like this?
My main preparation was of course looking at the condition ofObsessive Compulsive Disorder, which I have little tiny elements of inmy life anyway, but I?m certainly far from ruled by it. I think a lotof us have little things - some people don?t step on the cracks, a lotof us don?t even realize we?re doing it, we tie our shoes certain waysand we feel uncomfortable if we do it a different way, and there?s ananxiety within us. It?s a very interesting condition. There?s ananxiety within us that gets quelled when we do that pattern, every timewe do that behavior, it settles an anxiety within us. And a lot ofit?s subconscious because it seems so minor because they?re day to daythings that we have to do like tie our shoes or brush our teeth. Thiswas an exaggerated form, and it happens to certain people, it?s sounfortunate. The condition gets ramped up to a certain point wheretheir entire life is taken over by these behaviors that they have to gothrough to stop the anxiety that they?re experiencing. Their wholelife is catered to dealing with anxiety. So, I made some choices forthe character, all my choices were based around this condition hesuffers from.
You got to interact with the fantastic Jake Cherry, who isone of the best younger actors that pops up all over the place. Youdidn?t get to really interact with the team, though. Had you known anyof them coming in to film?
No, not really. Not too much.
And you said you were friends with Simon, I?m sure you a fan of the show?
Oh yeah, love the show, love the actors on the show. I thinkit?s great. I think it?s one of the GOOD network TV shows, it?s one ofmy favorite network shows. I think Eddie Bernero?s amazing. SimonMirren is a great friend of mine. It was terrific. It was almost likebeing a fan of these guys and this show, and then finding myself on setgoing, hey! Coolest show! Like when I did THE SHIELD, I couldn?tbelieve it, I was like, ?Holy Shit, I?m on THE SHIELD. Oh my god!?
Why do you think people should tune in to this episode specifically and keep watching?
Tune in! I was really captured in what Simon wrote. I wasreally captured in Vincent, this character?s pursuit of salvation. Because he seems like such an unredeemable character, like the actsthat he perpetrates are unforgiveable, perhaps they are. I think thespirit of the man himself is beyond salvation and that?s what I as theactor went for, you know?
Right, making an unsympathetic character very sympathetic because you kind of feel for this really sad man.
Right, and the thing is, inside of all of us, I don?t care whoyou are, at least at one stage in our lives, we?re lost. We?re tryingto be found and we want to be found, and we need to be loved. It?sinside all of us. It doesn?t matter whether you?re the executive of anetwork TV show, or you?re a movie star, whether you?re, fucking,Ghandi. I?m sure at a point in all of our lives, I don?t know aboutGhandi [laughing], but for the rest of us, there?s a point for all ofus where we need help. We need someone to take our hand, and take usto the light, and point us in a direction. This is just anotherexample. The thing is, there?s that old saying, like we all matter. You matter, I matter, this character Vincent matters. It doesn?tcondone his behavior. I?m not saying that the killing is okay ifyou?re fucked up. I?m not saying anything like that. What I?m sayingis that we all matter, and it?s my job to be a humanist and look at itfrom that point of view, and find the inroad. Maybe it?s because Iknow Simon so well, I understood exactly what he meant with thecharacter, and I hope that I conveyed it through my performance, and ifI haven?t, I apologize in advance, but I understood Vincent?s anguish, and I understood the desire for salvation, and I think before the end,he rests assured of himself. He?s not all bad.
Switching gears just a little bit - your fans are some ofthe most vocal that I?ve seen in recent years, still getting emailsabout MOONLIGHT and where we can find Alex, and the rest of the team. Do you still get a lot of fan outreach now?
Yeah, yeah, they?re very consistent in their passion, which islovely, I love them for it, so much. I hope they follow me into mycareer, and my next project. I mean, every character is not going tobe Mick St. John. It?s just not. I?m always going to play differentcharacters and hopefully they will find. I think my fans, becausethey?re so, comprehensive, with their study of me, and their research[laughs] of me, I think that they?re probably starting to get to knowme a bit now, as well, and if they?re still my fans, it means theystill like me. If they still like me, hopefully they?re going to likewhat I like in the characters that I choose. You know what I mean?
Oh yeah, they?re going to understand the thought processes in your choosing each character.
Right, so hopefully, they?re going to come to love thecharacters that I love, the way I love them for the same reasons, orsimilar reasons. I want to take them all with me, I want to take themon this journey and show them what I?m learning and what I?m loving, and they?re great people, too. My fans are so caring, they send me somany well wishes, and lovely cards. Beautiful paintings. It?samazing, I?ve never experienced it before. It can be a littleoverwhelming, I?m just like anyone else. Can you imagine, like openingthe mail, and getting 1,000 letters? It can be really weird, reallybizarre.
I?m not sure I could handle it!

Kate O'Hare wrote 3 chronicles on Alex O'Loughlin:
And the 3rd one on April 2009 is an audio interview with a warning:
"WARNING: As well-read as he may be, O'Loughlin is a man's man and an Aussie, and the following audio interview contains a few instances of profanity. I'm not technically proficient enough to bleep them, so consider this fair warning to send those of tender age or sensibilities out of the room before hitting the play button -- or just wear headphones."
"Among other things, O'Loughlin is discussing his guest role tonight on CBS' "Criminal Minds," executive-produced by feature-film producer Mark Gordon ("Grey's Anatomy"), former Chicago police officer Edward Allen Bernero ("Third Watch"), Deborah Spera, Chris Mundy and O'Loughlin's good friend, Simon Mirren ("Third Watch," "Without a Trace")."

Interview of Alex O'Loughlin in the Boston Herald by Mark A. Perigard
Of course, it is about his next guest appearance in Criminal Minds, but above all, it's about Moonlight. Here is some heart wrenching quotes:
?I look back at it with a broken heart for the most part. I put everypart of me into that show. I was fighting for it from every angle and Iwas there from the very beginning.?
?(Executive producer) Joel Silver called me right before Christmas.?Alex, we?re making the movie. You in?? ?Well, sure.? He hung up, and Ihaven?t heard from him since. I don?t know what the answer to that is.I don?t know.?
?It feels to me that ?Moonlight?s? disappearing out of my grasp. It?s sad, but I?m so glad to have been a part of it.?
Love and miss you Alex

ET Online posted today a lovely interview of Alex where he talked about his role in The Big Wheel, the 22nd episode of the 4th season of Criminal Minds which will aire tonight on CBS and other of his new projects. But still nothing about "The Backup Plan"
Alex promissed us plenty of sexyless roles to coming up and reminded us that he didn't go to leading school, but drama.
About "Three Rivers", Alex told us that Gonzo Gonzales-Stawinski, the cardio-thoracic surgeon whose life inspired his character Andy Yablonski, has become a great friend.
He also expressed his desire to work with Donate Life America in affiliation with Gonzo and CBS
And about himself, here is a cute quote:
"...I get up in the morning and my hair is all hanging in my face and poking up on one side, I need to shave and I look older than I am. When I stagger into the kitchen to get my breakfast, I don't think, "Oh, look at that handsome guy. Lookat that talented special creature."
Adorable!

Mandi Bierly of EW - PopWatch got an interview with Alex O'Loughlin
Alex talked about his enthusiasm for his role in The Big Wheel:
"It was a delight for me to play a role like this.",
and for the CBS pilot 'Three Rivers':
" It's a fantastic script that's really grownup and smart and important",
"It's a well-written piece that I foresee a longevity with that I didn'twith the other pilots that I read. I see three years ahead, you knowwhat I mean? I see the fifth season. I see where the characters aregoing to go, the potential. I loved the character. I've sat in on fiveopen-heart surgeries now. I realized how important a story like thiswas before I did that stuff, but the deeper I've gone into it, the moremesmerized I am."
Alex revealed a little bit on Andy's personality:"He's a bit cheeky, too. He's like a lovable scallywag."
It's done, I love him!
He also talked about his confidence on the 'Backup Plan':"It's a terrific little film." and his on screen chemistry with Jennifer Lopez in it:"So I think it's gonna work. I think we're gonna be really good on screen together", and about WhiteOut, where he performed a villain
And as usual, a cute quote of Alex:
"The word motel always sounds kinda seedy to me, so Ithought maybe we'd get to see him taking advantage of that proximity. But if he's a workaholic.... Are we not gonna see sex scenes isbasically what I'm asking you.
Ohmygod. No, I told them I'm happy to do whatever sex scenes they want.Either with actors or by myself. So they're getting back to me on that. That may or may not be a reason why they pick up the show. "He'sobsessed with sex. No, we're not gonna pick the show up. Moonlight f---ed with him. He's kinda all weird now."

Mike Moody of TV Squad talked to Alex this week and here are the news...
Alex talked about his great joy to be in demand, after working hard for a long time, his passionate love for the Dr. Gonzo Gozales-Stawinski since he worked with him for "Three Rivers", his desire to be involved in the Donate Life America cause...
When talking about his love for the vampire genre, Alex said: "Sure, why not genre film? Why don't we do a big film? I'd love to domore genre work. I don't know about anytime soon, but it's not out ofthe question for me".
As for the question if there is any chance for him to work again with Sophia Myles: "Yeah, maybe. There's nothing set up, but she's a friend, and you neverknow. It's a small world and we have a scarcely small actingfraternity, so I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. She's great."
And as usual, a cute quote of Alex when he talked about Kate Beckinsale on the WhiteOut set: "A little bit, yeah. It was more like, "Who was the better vampire?" Iwas the better vampire! No, I was the better vampire! No, I'm a boy, Iwas better and I'm stronger than you!" (Laughs) We went back and forth, and I think she finally said, "You're an idiot" and walked away. Butthe bottom line is Mick St. John would kill what's her name, I don'teven remember her name, from the (Underworld) movie! Mick St. John would kill her!"
